The paper, titled “ Energy, Power, and Cost Optimization of a Sodium-Ion Battery Pack via a Combined Physics-Based and Cost Modeling Approach, ” explores the optimization of sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries, which is an emerging alternative to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries due to sodium’s elemental abundance and reduced supply chain risks. The study analyzes the design of Na-ion batteries to balance energy, power, and cost. Key highlights from this paper include the optimization of electrode thicknesses and porosities using both multiphysics and cost models. In a significant stride towards advancing battery technology, Nascent Batteries has forged a partnership with the University of the Philippines Diliman National Engineering Center (UP NEC), marking the beginning of a promising collaboration. Signed on September 14, 2023, this collaboration agreement grants team members access to two cutting-edge research facilities: the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering (LEE) at the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Power Electronics Laboratory (PEL) at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute. Nascent Batteries will be providing research funding to kick off a series of innovative activities aimed at pioneering developments in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) and lithium-ion battery management systems (BMS). This project, titled "Development of Battery Electrode for Na-ion Batteries and Battery Management System for Li-ion Energy Storage Systems," is designed to explore innovations in battery technology. By focusing on the synthesis of novel cathode and anode materials and the optimization of battery material combinations, the initiative aims to benchmark and enhance existing electrode materials. Additionally, it seeks to explore the application of lithium-ion batteries in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including the benchmarking of off-the-shelf BMS modules and the design of a kWh-level battery pack. Nascent Technologies' executives, including Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Dj Donn Matienzo, Electrochemistry Division Head Dr. Maricor Divinagracia-Luzadas, and Energy Storage Systems Division Head Dr. BenJeMar-Hope Flores, participated in the StartUp QC 2023 Cohort 2, from August 30 to October 19, 2023. This program, aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in Quezon City, seeks to establish business hubs and inspire citizens to develop business models addressing societal challenges. The team entered Nascent-Capacikit into the competition, vying for a 1M Php equity-free grant. The product, a mobile charging unit, garnered interest from Startup QC's Program Manager, Mr. Reuel Ruiz, Jr. Despite submitting a comprehensive 10-slide presentation and a 5-minute video detailing CapaciKit, Nascent Technologies did not advance to the final list. This experience has highlighted the importance of focusing on the initial market validation of their minimum viable product (MVP). Moving forward, Nascent Technologies plans to concentrate on demonstrating the practical utility and social impact of their innovative product, CapaciKit, in line with the program's objectives of stimulating entrepreneurial growth and addressing community needs in Quezon City.
